The main heritage centre is at Giffnock Library where you can access information covering the whole of the East Renfrewshire area in a comfortable, modern facility.  Resources available onsite include: historical newspapers, microfilm copies of the census for East Renfrewshire 1841-1901 and Old Parish Registers for Eastwood, Mearns and Cathcart parishes, valuation rolls, a local history book collection, a map collection and information files.

Making an appointment

The local studies librarian is based at Giffnock Library but is not always on site.  However, you can visit anytime the library is open when library staff will be happy to give you access to resources. If you think you need a bit more assistance we recommend making an appointment with the local studies librarian who can discuss your enquiry with you and offer you support with your research. To book an appointment call 0141 577 3872 or send an e-mail.

Heritage at Barrhead Foundry

There is a collection of resources in Barrhead Foundry Library which concentrates on the Barrhead, Neilston & Uplawmoor areas. Resources available onsite include: Historical newspapers, microfilm copies of the census for Barrhead, Neilston & Uplawmoor and the Old Parish Registers for Neilston Parish, a local history book collection, maps and information files.

Barrhead Foundry staff will give you access to resources anytime the library is open but once again, if you think you need a bit more assistance we recommend making an appointment with the local studies librarian who can discuss your enquiry with you and offer you support with your research.

Heritage at your local library

All of our libraries hold small collections of local history books and materials with Neilston Library having a strong collection relating to the village. Library members can also get free access to Ancestry Library Edition* at Barrhead Foundry, Busby, Clarkston, Eaglesham, Giffnock, Mearns, Neilston and Thornliebank libraries.

Enquiry Service

If you can't visit us in person, you can still get easy access to help through our enquiry service. Forward your enquiry to us by phoning 0141 577 3872 or sending an e-mail and we will carry out up to 30 minutes of research on your behalf, free of charge. 30 minutes is often long enough for us to either answer your enquiry fully or to give you an idea of whether our resources can help you through more detailed research.

After this you may decide to organise a visit in person to do further research.  Alternatively, you can ask us to do further research on local history or specific family history questions on your behalf, for which there would be a charge of £10.00 per half hour. If you do ask us to do research for you, we will give you an idea of how successful we think it will be, how long we think it will take and you will be kept updated with progress throughout the enquiry.
