Digitisation and new technology allows people from all over the world to connect with East Renfrewshire's heritage
In addition to the key resources available in Giffnock Heritage Centre and Barrhead Foundry Library, there is a significant collection of local history material which is available to view on request. This includes, photographs, ephemera and small museum items which have been collected and preserved over many years.
To make this material accessible to you, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to catalogue and list items onto an online catalogue on www.portaltothepast.co.uk. This means you can easily browse the collection and arrange to view anything of interest. As this is an ongoing project, more and more items will be added over time.
Social media is a great way for you to share our collections and connect with us no matter where you live. Join the conversation at EastRenfrewshireHeritageService
To enhance our own collection of local resources, we offer free access to Ancestry Library Edition* to East Renfrewshire library members. Simply log on to a PC or connect to your own digital device through our free Wi-Fi in Barrhead, Busby, Clarkston, Eaglesham, Giffnock, Mearns, Neilston or Thornliebank libraries and you will have access to millions of world-wide records on this popular website.
