Sporting Judo Barrhead have been working closely with the Active Schools team for a number of years, delivering curricular and after-school sessions to a variety of age groups in local primary schools.
However, last week the judo club started delivering to pupils of St Luke's High School, the first time a high school in Barrhead has received a block of coaching.
The programme will last four weeks and will see all S1 pupils take part in a taster session as well as targeted groups in S4. The purpose of the programme is to let local children experience a new sport, foster a new relationship between the school to the club and promote continued participation through joining the club to participate over a longer period of time.
The relationship with Sporting Judo Barrhead and Active Schools has been fruitful over the past three years, with many children now moving from the school tasters and after school sessions, to the club coaching activities at Barrhead Foundry where they can continue the fun and learning. All Sporting Judo sessions are delivered by Tommy and Stephen Gillan, a father and son who have roots in Barrhead and who were both former pupils at St Luke's too! They always deliver fun and energetic sessions and no doubt why the club is bursting at the seams.
To top things off, Tommy was recently awarded East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure's 'Community Coach of the Year', a reward for all of the aforementioned work.
I really like judo as its different to any other sport I've tried. I like the discipline and all the types of throws you can learn.
Aaron, St Luke's pupil
The partnership has been really strong and we've been working together now for 3 years, often giving 4 or 6 week tasters but we also did various events based around the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The club and coaches are great, often delivering for free and taking holidays from work to do so. The most important thing is that we're strengthening club links and giving the children a chance to be physically active within the community.
