A team of talented gymnasts from Mearns Castle High School came away with an impressive medal haul at the recent secondary schools gymnastics championships organised by ERCL Active Schools
This annual competition acted as a qualifying event for the National Championships being held on Sunday 19th March 2017 at Bells Sports Centre in Perth. All secondary schools within East Renfrewshire were represented at the event including Hermitage Academy from Helensburgh who came along to get some experience.
Hosted at St Ninian's High School, the event consisted of a floor sequence and a vault for each participant. Mearns Castle had one level 1 and one level 2 team competing, both consisting on 4 gymnasts. The teams, all girls, performed extremely well and came away with bronze medals for level 1 and gold medals for level 2.
Mearns Castle has a particularly strong gymnastics pathway within the school that has been focusing on developing the girls' confidence and skills. In addition to a weekly after school club that is run by trained East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure coaches, a Friday lunch club is also run by Mrs McNab, a PE teacher within Mearns Castle. Both clubs are well attended with around 20 pupils at the after school club each term. The success of both teams at the competition, shows the great standard in both clubs and the progress the girls are making each year.
I am absolutely delighted with the result from the competition the girls all worked really hard to achieve their medals. Friday Lunch club has been running for 3 years and has been a great success. Special mention has to go to Rachel McCallum (S6) and Taylor Smith (S6) for their continued commitment, support and encouragement of the younger gymnasts in the club.

I am really pleased for the level two team, which I was a member of, achieving gold medals. It was fantastic to see the Level 1 team also coming away with medals as it is their first time at the event. I have represented the school every year at the gymnastics competition and it has been a great experience for me each year.
Rachel McCallum, S6 pupil
