A group of enthusiastic P7 pupils from Netherlee Primary School recently completed their Young Leader Award, a nationally recognised programme in sports leadership.
The pupils volunteered an hour of their time every Wednesday morning before school to undertake the course, which was delivered by class teacher, Miss Bell and Active Schools Coordinator, Lesley Birrell Palmer. The leaders were trained in how to deliver fun games safely and effectively, focusing on modules such as communication and organisation, with the aim of increasing their confidence to deliver activities to groups of young children.
As a culmination of their training, the Young Leaders at Netherlee have now launched a lunchtime P3 Fun Games club, providing them with an opportunity to put their newly acquired skills into action. There are also plans for the Young Leaders to organise and deliver a Mini-Olympics event to P1 pupils next term.
The Young Leader programme is part of the wider East Renfrewshire Leadership pathway that also encompasses P6 Playzone Leaders, Secondary Sports Leaders, and the East Renfrewshire Sports Leadership Academy, all of which aim to develop experiences of leadership in both school and the community, providing pupils with valuable skills for future education and employment.
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the pupils grow and develop into young leaders over the last few months. From their feedback, they have found this leadership opportunity really fun and worthwhile for their future. In particular, they feel more confident explaining games to others and working alongside different people
