Local primary school pupils from across East Renfrewshire have been having great fun playing football as part of the Tesco Bank Football Challenge.
The Tesco Bank Football Challenge is a community programme run in partnership with the Scottish FA. The project introduces football to Primary Two and Primary Three children (six to eight years old) across Scotland to help get them engaged in a healthy and active lifestyle. The children have the opportunity to take part in activities such as mini games, ball skills and various football-based challenges where Scottish FA coaches work alongside class teachers. In addition, teachers receive additional training and support through in-service courses ensuring that football and sporting activity continues long after the coaches have left the school.
The programme also incorporates the Positive Coaching Scotland philosophy, which challenges the 'win at all costs' mentality and focuses on learning, respect, responsibility, effort and success.
Over 600 pupils from all Barrhead, Neilston and Uplawmoor primary schools along with Thornliebank and Our Lady of the Missions, participated in the programme this year and all pupils are looking forward to a football mega-festival planned for March 2017 where they will get the opportunity to showcase their newly honed skills.
Staff and pupils have obviously loved the programme judging by their comments!
The pupils enjoyed their session with coaches Tony and John. The football coaching sessions gave the children the opportunity to get active, learn new football skills and enjoy the game.

The children have spent the last few weeks having fun and learning new skills. We're helping them become healthier, happier and more confident whilst promoting the importance of an active lifestyle. The Tesco Bank Football Challenge is a well-established part of our primary school programme, and continues to go from strength to strength in East Renfrewshire.
