National Coach and Top referee receive ERCL recognition

Active Schools Team Leader Barry Cook recently caught up with two local award winners to pass on their richly deserved trophies following a glittering ceremony in late 2016 at which they could not attend.

David Gatherer Hampden Park 2 For the past 4 years, in partnership with sportscotland, East Renfrewshire Council, and now East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, have made a commitment to celebrate and recognise all the hard work that goes on in our communities to support sports participation and development.

The East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Coaching, Officiating and Volunteering Awards 2016 provided the opportunity to thank coaches, officials and sport volunteers from across the authority for their hard work, commitment and dedication and to acknowledge and share their achievements.

In total 10 individuals were recognised and acknowledged for their work throughout the year, but unfortunately David Gatherer, Young Person's Coach of the Year, and Steven McLean, Technical Official of the Year, could not attend due to other commitments.

David has been an under 18 British Eventing coach for many years and has strongly supported Fiona Rawson, the regional development officer, in her work.

Steven, a current top level category 1 football referee and former Mearns Castle High pupil, was recognised for his outstanding achievements in 2016 where he not only refereed his first 'Old Firm' match on 31st December but also took charge of the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden between Rangers and Hibernian.  This domestic showpiece match is reserved for the most consistent and high achieving officials.

Congratulations to David and Steven as well as all our other award winners!

David is a brilliant coach; he is approachable, fun, encouraging, realistic and above all he cares. He coaches U18's of all abilities all over Scotland, always giving 100%. He attends our regional U18 classes where he helps with course walks. He also attends the U18 Regional Championships every year. He sleeps for nearly a week on a blow up mattress in the back of the lorry, walks the course endlessly with groups or individuals, helps with horse management, dressage preparation, show jumping course walking and warm up but above all, is a source of knowledge, calmness and encouragement: he develops confidence.
Without his support, the governing body would not have as many youngsters enjoying eventing or as many gaining their 1* qualifications which is a great achievement. He makes participants believe anything is possible. He also doesn't lose them when they leave our programme. "Overgrown" U18's still enjoy his help and support!
Fiona Rawson, Horse Scotland, nominator of David Gatherer

Steven has been a football referee since 1997, taking up the whistle aged 16. Further to taking charge of local schools and amateur matches, he progressed onto the senior list of Scottish referees in 2003, making it to the top level as a Category 1 official in 2007. His first appointment in that year was Stranraer v Forfar Athletic and since then he has progressed through the Scottish leagues to the very top level. I'm delighted he was recognised by the ERCL judging panel this year for his achievements!
Steven Percy, Friend and nominator of Steven McLean
