Badminton was the 'BIG HIT' last week in Barrhead, with almost 200 primary pupils participating in a Badminton Bonanza at The Foundry.
Primary 6 pupils from all five Barrhead schools were in attendance where they got the opportunity to try out skills and games relating to badminton.
The badminton festival, known as 'The Big Hit Festival' is one part of the preparations for the Badminton World Championships which will take place at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow in August 2017. The festival was delivered by Badminton Scotland staff alongside Active Schools staff and more notably several young sports leaders.
The sports leaders, who are graduates from the ERCL Leadership Academy, clearly demonstrated their excellent skills and confidence as they 'served up' a feast, full of fun activities for the pupils throughout the day. The loudest cheer of the day was kept for Nettie, the official mascot for the Badminton World Championships. She moved around the pupils setting a great atmosphere giving hi-5's!
At the end of the day the pupils were all congratulated for their efforts and given some information detailing where they can go to play badminton on a regular basis with friends and/or family in the local area. If you would like to find out more about what Badminton opportunities exist across East Renfrewshire, please contact Active Schools or visit our badminton pages.
The activities were really well organised and the sport leaders were great. Many of the pupils had not played before but picked up the basic skills very quickly. A great day all round!

I had a great time leading the badminton activities. The pupils were well up for it! It felt really good putting some of the skills I learnt at the ERCL Leadership Academy to the test and the communication skills I learned really helped me get the groups organised and active really quickly.
