Schools, in partnership with ERCL Active Schools, recently competed in two events ahead of the Scottish Gymnastics national finals next month
The Active Schools team have been very busy supporting our local schools to compete to their highest possible level in two separate gymnastics qualifying events.
Firstly, Victoria Park, Sport Competition Coordinator and Sarah Bird, Active Schools Co-ordinator (Woodfarm Cluster) organised and delivered a regional qualifying competition for the Scottish Gymnastics Schools Floor and Vault at Barrhead Foundry. Overall, there were over 100 boys and girls from S1-S6 with the top 2 teams at each level qualifying to the National Finals.
The competition followed a new format this year based on recently introduced rules set out by Scottish Gymnastics and was an outstanding event with a very high level of competition. The event was open to competitive gymnasts in Levels 1-3 and therefore welcomed experienced pupils as well as offering a first competitive opportunity for many Level 1 gymnasts. The pupils had been training and practicing hard at after school clubs ,where their teachers put in a lot of time and effort in order to pull together and perfect routines for each pupil and each pupil had to perform a vault and a floor routine marked against set criteria and set skills.
In the end, the winning teams were:
Level 1: 1st Barrhead High School 2nd St.Ninians High School
Level 2: 1st Barrhead High School 2nd St.Ninians High School
Level 3: 1st St.Ninians High School 2nd St.Ninians High School
Further to this local event, a Level 4 national qualifier also took place recently at North Inch Community Campus, Perth. Pupils attended from Mearns Castle and St.Ninians High School where both schools qualified and will join the other school teams at the National finals next month.
Good luck from everyone at ERCL to all the teams and pupils representing their schools and representing East Renfrewshire at The Scottish Floor & Vault Championships 2018 on Sunday 18th March 2018 at Bells Sport Centre, Perth.
Having the event at Barrhead Foundry was ideal to create a proper competition environment for the pupils and the new format worked very well. It was so good to see the pupils enjoying themselves but also getting in the zone to perform to the best of their ability.

Our pupils had an amazing day and were all still on a high today talking about it today... I got to see much more of my gymnasts perform than the previous years and there was a great atmosphere throughout the day in the hall.

It was great to compete through in Perth with the rest of the Level 4 team. There were so many good gymnasts but we all did really well. I was so pleased when I heard the news that we came in 2nd place. I am glad to be part of the Mearns Castle Gymnastics Team.

I was delighted for the level 4 team on their success at getting through to the Scottish Schools Final in Perth in March. The team's effort throughout the day and encouragement they gave each other was superb. I would like to thank the parents for their support and ex-pupil and gymnast Taylor Smith who helped out on the day.
