Theatre in Schools Scotland

East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure strives to ensure all children in the authority can access high quality, engaging theatre and can often subsidise the costs of these shows for local schools. We work closely with many production companies to enable this, especially the Theatre in Schools Scotland initiative, which provides high quality theatre to schools in every authority of Scotland.

Theatre in Schools Scotland is managed by Imaginate and the National Theatre of Scotland to develop the provision of high quality theatre and dance available for in-school performances across Scotland. All productions are designed specifically with schools in mind, suitable for school buildings and age appropriate for pupils. They provide productions suitable for classes across Nursery to P7. The programme is year-round and available throughout Scotland.

The 2019 - 2020 programme, informed by input from teachers, featured productions from a variety of Scottish performing companies, including:

Catherine Wheels

Cloud Man by Ailie Cohen Puppet Maker Suitable for P1-3

Claude loves clouds, and he dreams one day of seeing a Cloud Man. Cloud Men are very rare, very shy and very, very hard to find. Sitting on little cloud cushions, the audience watch Claude as he follows clues to the top of Cloud Mountain, where they will find a big surprise!

A show with puppets, storytelling and lots of clouds, Cloud Man explores ways we make sense of the world and encourages the audience to notice the beauty and wonder found in everyday life.

Whirlygig by Daniel Padden / Red Bridge Arts & Catherine Wheels Theatre Company Suitable for P2-6

The famous musical quartet have been playing together for years. Everywhere they go audiences queue to hear them. But one day the musicians arrive for a concert, ready to wow audiences, but there is no score to play. What will they do?

Tempers explode, arguments break out, the trombone player leaves and the flautist is crying in the corner. What can the group do to come together? Can they make up? Can they compromise? Can they find a way to play together when they have no idea what to play?

Mikey and Addie by Andy Manley and Robert Alan Evans / Red Bridge Arts Suitable for P5-7

Mikey is 10. A sunny boy. He lives alone with his mum. Mikey's mum has a secret. It is not well kept. Everyone knows it. Everyone except for Mikey.A visual storytelling performance for older primary classes about families and friendships, looking at the issues and choices we have growing up. It asks, how do you work out who you are when everything is changing? A beautiful and bittersweet show about coming to terms with the loss of childhood innocence and discovering one's place in the world.

Lifeboat by Catherine Wheels Theatre Company Suitable for P5-7

Lifeboat is the extraordinary true story of Bess Walder and Beth Cummings. Set in World War II, it is a story of courage, a story of survival and a story of enduring friendship.

On Friday 13 September 1940, a ship, The City of Benares, set sail from Liverpool for Canada carrying 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed. Beth and Bess were fifteen years old when they spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. They willed each other to survive.
