Using Skype

Come along, learn the lingo among friendly faces and have some hands-on fun.

We have introductory sessions to give you a flavour of what it's all about, 3-week courses to free you from the fear, and one-off sessions on popular topics based on feedback from customers.

Bring your own Apple iPad, Android or Fire tablet, or use one of ours.

What's on offer?


A 90-minute introductory session for complete beginners to help learners take the first steps in using an Apple iPad, Android or Fire tablet.  Learn how to connect to East Renfrewshire Libraries' free WiFi and browse the internet on your own tablet. 

Bring your own device or use one provided for the session.

NOTE: This session is a pre-requisite for doing the more detailed 3-week Getting Started with Tablets course.

Getting Started with Tablets (iPad, Android OR FIRE)

A 3-week course for complete beginners to help you learn the basics of using an Apple iPad, Android or Fire tablet, from switching it on and off to searching the internet and downloading apps.

Bring your own device or use one provided at each session.


We listen to you! In response to feedback from customers, we run short, one-off sessions on popular computing topics from time to time throughout the year, as well as the regular computer and tablet classes.

Not sure which type of tablet to choose or what the difference is between them all? In this class, you will learn about the main types of tablets and key specifications. We have Apple iPad, Android and Fire tablets for you to try, plus valuable advice on important things to consider prior to purchasing. Be in-the-know before you buy. Come along, have a go and see for yourself. (2 hours)

Tap 'n' Talk: Skype

Want to use a tablet to keep in touch, face-to-face, with family and friends who may be far away? Then come along with your device and have fun learning how to download, register and use the Skype app to make and receive video calls. Please note that an understanding of how your device works is required for this session. (2 hours)

Digital Magazines

Save your pennies and read your favourite UK magazines for free on your tablet.  Learn how to download, access and explore an exciting range of popular magazines.  Current issues and back issues are available at your fingertips. (1½ hours)

e-Books and e-audiobooks

Learn how to download eBooks and eAudiobooks to enjoy on your tablet.  Preview, read or listen to your choice of fabulous items from the comfort of your own home, on the move - wherever.  Manage your account online too: borrow, renew, extend your loan and fines will be a thing of the past. (1½ hours)

Snap 'n' Share

Learn how to snap photos with your tablet and share them online with family and friends via email. (1½ hours)

The Street Where I Lived

Travel back in time and explore places from your past. Using a PC or tablet, we'll help you discover the online tools and maps of the National Library of Scotland, Google Street View and Google Earth. Visit old streets, cities and countries from your childhood and years gone by.

Bring your own tablet to the class, or use a library computer on the day.
