Witchcraft in the Shire of Renfrew
Tuesday 28th October, 6.30pm to 8pm
This event takes place in Barrhead Foundry
During the 16th and 17th century in Scotland, around 4,000 men and women were accused of witchcraft, a crime punishable by state sanctioned execution. Of that number, around 15% came from the west of Scotland, second in number only to Edinburgh and Lothian.
But were these people really witches? Did they meet in covens and do spells? Did they fly around on broomsticks wearing pointy hats with their black cats in tow? Or were they heretics in league with the Devil?
Join local historian Lorraine Murray to separate fact from fiction and to find out more about some of the cases from the old ‘Shire of Renfrew’, which includes present day East Renfrewshire.
