Earth Day 2025

Our Power, Our Planet is the theme for this year’s Earth Day. We have been asking our customers to think of an action pledge for something they can do or perhaps change a behaviour that will help turn the tide on the climate crisis.

Pledges have been coming in thick and fast from all ages and some are below:

“I pledge to go meat-free 3 nights a week” “I have switched to solid soap and shampoo” “Turn off lights when not needed and don’t leave TV on standby”

Some figures below highlight why there is a need for everyone to take action. Head along to your local library and add your pledge and take inspiration from others.

-East Renfrewshire contributes 475,000 tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere annually
-The Council contributes to 3.5% of all East Renfrewshire emissions.
By 2040:
-3.9billion people in the world will be exposed to extreme heat
-400million people will be unable to work
-There will be a 50% increase in crop failure
-700 million people will be exposed to droughts lasting 6 months or more
-In Scotland, we will see an increase in pests and diseases, our soil quality will deteriorate and flooding will increase.
-1 in 6 species in UK are becoming extinct.
-There will be an increase in migration as people react to droughts/ famines/ flooding/ war
