Wednesday 6th March, 1pm

This free event takes place at Barrhead Foundry

Join historian and author Dr. Stuart Nisbet, as he gives an illustrated talk based on his own personal journey to uncover the truth about Scotland and slavery. A journey which led to the publication of his first novel The Book of Here and There.

Dr. Stuart Nisbet is well known in the area for his local history publications and in recent years he has worked as a freelance tutor for East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure. On a wider basis, for more than 20 years, he has been one of the leading researchers on Scotland and slavery. In 2015 Stuart had a chapter on the first book on Scotland and slavery: Tom Devine’s Recovering Scotland’s Slavery Past.

After the talk, Stuart will be signing copies of The Book of Here and There. Loosely based on the personal detective trail uncovered in the talk, the novel tells the story of the hunt for a Scottish slave owner, but also through the voice of his enslaved scribe, Cato.

Please note:

Frida Kahlo – Exhibition On Screen

Various Days | £10

Sunday 10th March, 2pm & 7pm

A unique exhibition on screen

Released to coincide with International Women’s Day, Exhibition on Screen is delighted to bring Frida Kahlo back to cinema for the attention it deserves after last year’s Covid restrictions.

Who was Frida Kahlo? Everyone knows her, but who was the woman behind the bright colours, the big brows, and the floral crowns? Take a journey through the life of a true icon, discover her art, and uncover the truth behind her often turbulent life.

Making use of the latest technology, we take an indepth look at key works throughout her career. Using letters Kahlo wrote to guide us, this definitive film reveals her deepest emotions and unlocks the secrets and symbolism contained within her art.

Exhibition on Screen’s trademark combination of interviews, commentary and a detailed exploration of her art delivers a treasure trove of colour and a feast of vibrancy. This personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works, and highlights the source of her feverish creativity, her resilience, and her unmatched lust for life, politics, men and women.
