Wednesday 6th March, 1pm

This free event takes place at Barrhead Foundry

Join historian and author Dr. Stuart Nisbet, as he gives an illustrated talk based on his own personal journey to uncover the truth about Scotland and slavery. A journey which led to the publication of his first novel The Book of Here and There.

Dr. Stuart Nisbet is well known in the area for his local history publications and in recent years he has worked as a freelance tutor for East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure. On a wider basis, for more than 20 years, he has been one of the leading researchers on Scotland and slavery. In 2015 Stuart had a chapter on the first book on Scotland and slavery: Tom Devine’s Recovering Scotland’s Slavery Past.

After the talk, Stuart will be signing copies of The Book of Here and There. Loosely based on the personal detective trail uncovered in the talk, the novel tells the story of the hunt for a Scottish slave owner, but also through the voice of his enslaved scribe, Cato.

The Royal Ballet presents SWAN LAKE

Out hunting, Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans. One among them transforms into the beautiful human Odette and he is immediately enamoured. But Odette is bound by a spell which keeps her captive as a swan during the day. Can Siegfried free her?

Tchaikovsky’s sensational score combines with the evocative imagination of choreographer Liam Scarlett and designer John Macfarlane to heighten the dramatic pathos of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s quintessential ballet classic. Swan Lake remains to this day one of the best-loved works in the classical ballet canon.

Down For The Count Orchestra – A Century of Swing

May 2nd, 2024 | £25

THURSDAY 2ND MAY, 7.30PM

Join the UK’s hardest swinging band Down for the Count All-Stars for “one hellova celebration of vintage music” (TimeOut London) as they celebrate A Century of Swing.

Described as “a breath of fresh air on the swing scene”, Down for the Count are regularly found in jazz clubs across the UK and abroad (Ronnie Scott’s London, Le Caveau de la Huchette Paris), at prestigious concert halls (Cadogan Hall, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall) at festivals including London Jazz Festival, and on BBC Radio.

Now they are bringing the sounds and feels of the best jazz clubs to theatres around the UK – with an electrifying show full of incredible energy, musicianship, and their own signature wry wit and humour.

Following the success of their 2023 performance for us, Down for the Count are delighted to be returning to Eastwood Park for another celebration of A Century of Swing. They will be performing a new selection of the best swing music, once again tracing the origins of the style from 1920s America through to the genre’s heyday in the 30s, 40s and 50s.

You’ll also hear other original arrangements of classic jazz standards featured on the band’s new album, Just You, Just Me, instrumental songs from the likes of Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, and vocal classics from singers such as Nat ‘King’ Cole and Ella Fitzgerald – all presented with Down for the Count’s own unmistakable witticisms.

“Awesome!!!”
